Answer

(A) Harmful Effects of Alcohol / Drug Abuse:
Behavioral Effects: Immediate manifestations include reckless behavior, vandalism, and violence.
Physiological Damage : Excessive doses can lead to death due to respiratory failure, heart failure, or cerebral hemorrhage. Chronic use causes severe damage to the central nervous system and the liver (cirrhosis).
Socio-economic Impact : Substance abuse leads to financial distress for the individual and their family, often resulting in social isolation and strained relationships.
(B) Brief Notes:
1. Opioids:These are drugs that bind to specific opioid receptors present in our Central Nervous System (CNS) and gastrointestinal tract. Heroin, chemically known as diacetylmorphine (smack), is a common example. It is a depressant and slows down body functions.
2. Cannabinoids:These are a group of chemicals which interact with cannabinoid receptors present principally in the brain. Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the inflorescences of the plant Cannabis sativa. They are known for their effects on the cardiovascular system of the body.
