A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another.
Producers prepare food for themselves through the process of photosynthesis. Consumers eat producers. Consumers are themselves eaten by other higher consumers. Finally, when consumers die, the decomposers decompose their bodies to convert them into organic matter. The nutrients from the organic matter are taken up by producers.
