MCQ
Choose the correct statement regarding transition elements?
  • A
Transition elements has low melting points
  • B
Transition elements do not have catalytic activity
  • Transition elements exhibit variable oxidation states
  • D
Transition elements exhibit inert pair effect

Answer

Correct option: C.
Transition elements exhibit variable oxidation states
c
Transition metals and many of their compounds show paramagnetic behaviour as metal ions generally contain one or more unpaired electrons in them and hence their complexes are generally paramagnetic. The enthalpies of atomisation of the transition metals are high because of having larger number of unpaired electrons in their atoms, they have stronger inter atomic interaction and hence stronger bonding between the atoms. The transition metals generally form coloured compounds due to the presence of unpaired electrons ($d-d$ transition in most of the compounds). Transition metals and their many compounds act as good catalyst due to their ability to adopt multiple oxidation state and to form complexes; also they have larger surface area.
