Question
Complex alternative statement

Answer

A complex alternative statement is a type of complex compound statement and contains at least one compound statement. And the second statement is a simple or combined statement.
This type of statement has an alternative paramount factor and it applies to the whole statement.
Examples of complex alternative statements:
1. Either (Indian cricket team will win the toss) or (Indian cricket team will not win.) B v ~ N
2. Either (Indian cricket team will win and people will be happy) or (Indian cricket team will be defeated.)
(K & P) v B
3. (If the student has passed the SSC examination and only then he can get admission in the eleventh standard.)
Or (if the student has passed the SSC examination and only then he gets admission in the diploma course.) (P ↔ Q) v (P ↔ Q)
In the first example shown above, the first option is a simple statement and the second option is a composite statement. In the second example the first option is a joint statement and the second option is a simple statement. In the third example the two options are a combined statement.
  • The above statements are complex alternative statements; Because option (V) is the paramount factor in each.
  • Thus, in a complex alternative statement, at least one option must be a joint statement. Another alternative could be a simple or combined statement.
