The water crisis in India has developed due to certain geographical and man induced reasons, which are as follows: Rain is the main source of water supply In India. it is very irregular and uncertain In many area. Due to this, water crisis develops frequently in the regions of less rainfall. The water problem is very serious in western Rajasthan, north-western Gujarat and in the interior parts of Western Ghats in peninsular plateau. There has been a population explosion In India during last four decades. Water usage is Increasing very fast due to Increasing demand of food grains and cash crops for the fast growing population, Increasing urbanization and rising living standards of the people. As a result, the water shortage Increases continuously. Even today, there Is a shortage of drinking water in $8 \%$ of cities and about $50 \%$ villages in India. In order to coop with the demand for water for irrigation and for Industries, much of ground water is taken out through wells and tube- wells. As a result, the ground water level has Is decreased there is a substantial decrease in the ground water reserves. Besides, the quality of the water Is degraded due to its multiple uses. Water Is polluted through urban sewage and industrial effluents.
