After Independence, the irrigated area in India has increased four times.
  • Irrigation is practiced in about $38\%$ of net sown area.
  • More than $40\%$ area of the total area sown is under irrigation in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Tamilnadu and Manipur.
  • There is a difference regarding the area under irrigation in every State.
  • Coastal istricts in Andhra Pradesh, delta regions of Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi and Kaveri have intensive irrigation.
  • In Mizoram only $7.3\%$ of the total area sown is under irrigation while in Punjab it is $90.8\%.$

  • As wells and tube wells are used for irrigation, the ground water resource has decreased.
  • The country is facing severe problems as some states extract ground water in large volumes causing a decrease in the ground water.
