For a chemical reaction of base, $OH ^{-}$ present in its aqueous solution is responsible.
(i) Reaction of base with acid: Reaction of a base with an acid forms salt and water. This reaction is called neutralisation.
For example,
(1) $NaOH ( aq )+ HCl ( aq ) \longrightarrow NaCl ( aq )+ H _2 O ( l )$
(2) $2 KOH ( aq )+ H _2 SO _4( aq ) \longrightarrow$ $K _2 SO _4( aq )+2 H _2 O ( l )$
In short, Base + Acid $\longrightarrow$ Salt + Water
(ii) Reaction of base with non-metal oxide: Reaction of base with oxides of non-metal forms salt and water.
For example,
(1) $Ca ( OH )_2( aq )+ CO _2(g) \rightarrow \underset{\substack{\text { Calcium } \\ \text { carbonate }}}{ CaCO _3(s)}+ H _2 O ( l )$
(2) $2 NaOH ( aq )+ SO _3(g) \rightarrow \underset{\substack{\text { Sodium } \\ \text { sulphate }}}{ Na _2 SO _4( aq )}+ H _2 O ( l )$
In short,
Base + Oxide of non-metal $\longrightarrow$ Salt + Water
(iii) Reaction of a base with some metals: By the reaction of a strong base like sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide with certain amphoteric metals ( $Zn , Al$ ) gives salt and hydrogen gas. For example,

In short, Base + Metal + Water $\longrightarrow$ Salt $+ H _2(g)$
