Question
Explain the climatic condition of Ladakh.

Answer

Ladakh is situated in the Northern most part of India. Its high-altitude location in the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges contributes to the unique weather conditions. It experiences extremely cold and dry winters. It is often below freezing point.
The altitude in Ladakh varies from about 3000 m in Kargil to more than 8000 m in the Karakoram. The air at this altitude is so thin that the heat of the Sun can be felt intensely. In summers, the day temperatures are just above 0° and the night temperatures well below-30°C. In winters, it is freezing cold when the temperatures may remain below -40°C for most of the time. There is little rainfall as it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. Rainfall is as low as 10 cm every year. Ladakh enjoys abundant sunshine throughout the year due to its high elevation and clear skies.
