Explain the formation of the lok Sabha.

  • The Lok Sabha is the Lower House of Parliament. Being the ‘House of People its members are directly elected by the people.
  • The present Lok Sabha consists of $545$ members. Of these $543$ are directly elected and $2$ members of the Anglo-Indian community are nominated by the President of India.
  • $543$ seats are distributed among the States on the basis of population. Each State is divided into single member constituencies.
  • There is provision for the reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in proportion to their population.
  • The normal tenure of the Lok Sabha is five years. It can be dissolved earlier by the President. Parliament can extend its term by one year at a time during the National Emergency.
  • The members of the Lok Sabha elect from among themselves the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker.
