Explain the internal structure of chloroplast graphically.

Answer

Chloroplasts are round or oval shaped and covered with two membranes made of lipoproteins. Inside its structure there is an area of grana and stroma. The stroma is filled with proteinaceous fluid and contains lipid droplets. The grana contains coloured pigments and the stroma is colourless and pigmentless. The pigments mainly include $Chl . a$, $Chl . b$, xanthophyll and carotene etc. The main pigment among these is $Chl . a$, the rest belong to the category of accessory pigments. The stroma consists of two-layered lamellae made of lipoproteins. Each lamella stacks on top of each other, forming a shape like a stack of coins, this is called a granum. Lamellae found in granum are called granum lamella or thylakoids. Two adjacent granum are connected to each other by an intra-granum lamella or stroma lamella. The lamellae of the granum are green in colour due to being filled with pigments whereas the intragranum is colourless due to the absence of pigments. Ribosomes and starch granules are also scattered in the stroma .
