  1. India is the largest democratic country in the world.
  2. In a democracy a voter has the liberty to cast his vote to the candidate of his choice.
  3. Although the right to vote remains the same in each democratic country, the governance of each country may vary.
  4. Elections are the most important event on which the democracy exists.
  5. India has a parliamentary system. So, our Parliament is considered as the national institution that represents the people.
  6. The Parliament of India consists of the President, the Rajya Sabha, and the Lok Sabha.
  7. The Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of the Parliament whereas Lok Sabha is the Lower House.
  8. At state level we have Legislative Assembly and also Legislative Councils in a few states.
  9. The position of the voter is quite strategic because it is who casts his vote to elect members of all the houses. In this regard he is at the centre of the democracy.
  10. The votes elect the governing bodies by voting through the process called election.
  11. Hence, elections are the lifeline of democracy.
