Explain the terms : Impeachment

Answer

(1) The Constitution lays down the 'Impeachment procedure for the removal of the President of India.
(2) The President can be impeached by Parliament for violation of the Constitution or an act of treason.
(3) The impeachment motion can be moved in either House and passed by two-thirds majority: whereby the charges against the President are finalised.
(4) The other House conducts the inquiry of the charges. The President or his attorney is given the opportunity to refute the charges.
(5) At the end if the House finds the President guilty of charges, passes the 'Impeachment motion by two-thirds majority.
(6) Thereafter the President is removed from his office.
