MCQ
Following compounds are given

$(i)\,CH_3CH_2OH$

$(ii)\ CH_3COCH_3$

$(iii)\ \begin{array}{*{20}{c}}
  {C{H_3} - CHOH} \\
  {\,\,|} \\
  {\,\,\,\,\,\,C{H_3}}
\end{array}$

$(iv) \,CH_3OH$

Which of the above compound(s), on being warmed with iodine solution and $NaOH,$ will give iodoform ?

  • A
    $(i), (iii)$ and $(iv)$
  • B
    Only $(ii)$
  • $(i), (ii)$ and $(iii)$
  • D
    $(i)$ and $(ii)$

Answer

Correct option: C.
$(i), (ii)$ and $(iii)$
c
Compounds having either $CH_3CO-$ group or $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CHOH}-$ group, give iodoform when warmed with $I_{2}$ and $\mathrm{NaOH}$. Thus, compounds give iodoform when heated with $I_{2}$ and $N a O H .$ (Note : $N a O I$ oxidises $C H_{3} C H_{2} O H$ to $C H_{3} C H O,$ and gives positive iodoform test.)
