The desert touches eleven countries which include Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara. Along with vast stretches of sand, the Sahara desert is also covered with gravel plains and elevated plateaus with bare rocky surface.
