Question
How are lenticels formed? What is their function?

Answer

  • At some places on the stem, the phellogen cuts off closely arranged parenchymatous cells instead of cork cells.
  • These parenchyma cells rupture the epidermis and form lensshaped openings, called lenticels.
  • Lenticels help in the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the internal tissues of the woody stem.
