Question
How environmental protection act is enforced?
✓
Answer
The Environmental Protection Act (EPA) is enforced through a number of measures and mechanisms at both the central and state levels in India. Two of them are: (i) Monitoring and compliance: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) are responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with the provisions of the EPΑ. They conduct regular inspections and audits of industries and other sources of pollution to ensure compli-ance with environmental standards and regulations. (ii) Penalizing polluters: The EPA provides for penalties and punishments for violations of its provisions, including fines and imprisonment. The CPCB and SPCBs can impose fines and penalties on polluters for non-compliance with environmental standards and regulations.
