Question
One can sense colour only in bright light.

Answer

(i) The light sensitive screen of the eye called retina has two types of light sensitive cells.
(ii) Rod cells are concerned with vision in dim light and cone cells are responsible for the vision in presence of light.
(iii) Cone cells are also concerned with colour perception. They do not respond to dim light or no light
(iv) Thus, the knowledge of the colour is possible in presence of light and not in dark.
(v) Hence, we can identify and differentiate colours in presence of light.

A metal $X$ which is resistant to corrosion is produced by the electrolysis of its molten oxide whereas another metal $Y$ which is also resistant to corrosion is produced by the reduction of its oxide with carbon. Metal $X$ can be used in powder form in thermite welding whereas metal $Y$ is used in making cathodes of ordinary dry cells.

If the teeth are not cleaned regularly, they become covered with a sticky yellowish layer W of food particles and bacteria. Since layer W covers the teeth, the alkaline liquid X secreted by glands Y inside the mouth cannot reach the teeth surface to neutralise the acid formed by the action of organisms Z on sugary food, and hence tooth decay sets in.
  1. What is W known as?
  2. What is (i) X, and (ii) Y?
  3. What are organisms Z?
  4. State one way of removing layer W from the teeth.
