Question

Sodium chloride is often known as 'common salt' or 'table salt'
Which compound represents sodium chloride?

Conducts electricity when solid Conducts electricity When molten At room tempreture and pressure Can be bent or shaped
Option AYes YesSolid Yes
Option BNo No Solid No
Option CNo YesSolid No
Option DNoNo Solid Yes

Answer

(c)

Sodium chloride is an ionic compound. In solid state it forms a crystal lattice with strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositiely charged $Na ^{+}$ and $Cl ^{-}$ ions. Thus, ions are not free to move in solid state which makes the solid sodium chloride a bad conductor of electricity, while in the molten state ions are free to move and thus, it is able to conduct the electricity.
Also, due to the presence of strong electrostatic forces of attraction, Sodium chloride cannot be bent or shaped.
