Question
What are transgenic bacteria? Illustrate using any one example.
✓
Answer
Bacteria that have had their DNA manipulated to possess and express an extra (foreign) gene is known as transgenic bacteria. Example : The bacterium E. coli is an transgenic bacteria used to produce insulin to cure diabetes. Insulin molecule is made up of two peptide chains : chain A and chain B. The two DNA sequences corresponding to A and B, chains of human insulin are prepared through genetic engineering. These DNA sequences are introduced into the plasmids of E. Coli which produces two chains of insulin. Chains A and B are produced separately, they are extracted and combined by creating disulphide bonds to make insulin molecule.
