Question
What are transgenic bacteria? Illustrate using any one example.

Answer

Bacteria that have had their DNA manipulated to possess and express an extra (foreign) gene is known as transgenic bacteria.
Example : The bacterium E. coli is an transgenic bacteria used to produce insulin to cure diabetes. Insulin molecule is made up of two peptide chains : chain A and chain B. The two DNA sequences corresponding to A and B, chains of human insulin are prepared through genetic engineering. These DNA sequences are introduced into the plasmids of E. Coli which produces two chains of insulin. Chains A and B are produced separately, they are extracted and combined by creating disulphide bonds to make insulin molecule.
