Question
What is Fehling’s solution? How is it prepared?
✓
Answer
Fehling’s solution is a complex of cupric ions with tartaric acid.
It is a mild oxidising agent.
It is prepared by mixing equal amount of Fehling’s solution $‘A \ ’$ containing $CuSO_4$ solution and Fehling’s solution $‘B \ ’$ containing sodium potassium tartrate $($Rochelle salt$)$ in caustic soda $(NaOH)$ solution.
It is used to detect aldehydes that decolourise deep blue colour of the solution and give red precipitate of $Cu_2O.$
