Time and motion study techniques were developed by F.W Taylor. Time study is an art of observing and recording the time required to do each detailed element of an industrial operation. Through time study, the precise time required for each element of a man's work is determined. It helps in fixing the standard time required to do a particular job. Time study helps in deciding the standard time which is normally required to perform a certain job. With the help of time study standard work for a fair day for the workmen may be set.
Motion study eliminates useless motions and finds out the best method of doing a particular job. By undertaking motion study, an attempt is made to know whether some elements of a job can be eliminated, combined or their sequence can be changed to achieve the necessary rhythm. Motion study helps in avoiding unnecessary movements during the performance of a task. It helps in determining standard movements for doing the job.
