The Ryoti system had several problems for Indian farmers:
1. Forced contracts – Farmers (ryots) were made to sign contracts and take advance money, which forced them to grow indigo.
2. Exploitation – The price paid for indigo was very low, while the cost of cultivation was high, leading to heavy losses for farmers.
3. Soil damage – Indigo cultivation exhausted the fertility of the soil, making it difficult to grow food crops later.
These issues caused great hardship for the ryots and led to protests like the Blue Rebellion.
