EV Ramaswamy was known as Periyar. He was a prominent social reformer and politician of South India. He was famous for fight against caste discrimination and untouchability. He started Self Respect Movement or Dravidian Movement for demanding equal rights for the untouchables and women. He propagated the principles of nationalism, self-respect, women's rights and eradication of caste. He also opposed the dominance of the Brahmin caste and North Indian influence in South Indian society and politics.
