Question
Why is limestone used in the extraction of iron?

Answer

The ore of iron contains acidic gangue or impurity of silica, $SiO_2.$
To remove silica gangue, basic flux like calcium oxide $CaO,$ is required, which is obtained from the decomposition of limestone, $CaCO _3 . CaCO _3 \xrightarrow{\Delta} CaO + CO _2$
Silica reacts with $CaO$ and forms a fusible slag of $CaSiO_3.$
$SiO _2+ CaO \xrightarrow{\Delta} CaSiO _3$
Therefore in the extraction of iron, lime is used.
