Why was Mahavir Swami called "Jin"?

After the death of his parents, at the age of $30,$ Mahavir Swami took leave of his elder brother Nandvardhan and left the world. After this he underwent intense penance for twelve years and in the thirteenth year he attained the knowledge of Kaivalya. He conquered the senses during penance. Hence Mahavira was called Swami Jin.
