A number of laws have been enacted to protect women for their biological, social, cultural, economic and other empowerment.
Some of the major laws, year of law enforcement and purpose of the law are as follows:
1. Indian Criminal Act: 1860

2. Unethical Trade Detention Law: 1956
Provision to protect against sexual exploitation of women.
3. Dowry Prohibition Act: 1961
For the eradication of dowry contamination of the society.
4. Law on Abortion: 1971
For the protection of women's lives and their dignity.
5. Law prohibiting nasty performances: 1986
Provision to protect women from degrading or degrading treatment.
6. Sati Prohibition Act: 1987
In 1829, a law was enacted to abolish sati.
In 1987, the previous law was completely repealed and a new law was enacted.
