The Gonds lived in Gondwana region, a vast forested region of central India. They practised shifting cultivation. The large Gond tribe was further divided dinto many smaller clans. Each of these clans had its own raja or rai. When Delhi Sultanate was declining of a few large Gond kingdoms began to dominate the smaller Gond chiefs.
The emergence of large states changed the nature of Gond society. Their equal society gradually got divided into unequal social classes. Brahmanas received land grants from the Gond rajas and became more influential. The Gond chiefs wished to be recognised as Rajputs and gain more power.
