Question
Write a short note on Dandi March.

Answer

In $1930\ AD.$ Gandhiji announced that he would travel on foot to break the unjust salt law. He marched to Dandi for this purpose. The tax imposed on salt was the worst injustice of the British government. The British government had monopolised the production and sale of salt. Gandhiji and many other leaders believed that levying tax on salt was a sin because it is the basic need of our food.Gandhiji started marching to Dandi seashore of Navsari district from Sabarmati Ashram with his $78$ satyagrahis on $12th$ March, $1930.$ He covered a distance of $370\ km$ on foot. This historical journey has become famous as the 'Dandi March'. On the way, he organised meetings in various villages like Aslali, Bareja, Nadiad, Anand, Raas, Jambusar, Surat, Navsari, etc. He reached Dandi on $5th$ April. Early in the morning on $6th$ April,$ 1930,$ Gandhiji violated the salt law by picking up a pinch of salt in his hands on the shores of Dandi. He started the Civil Disobedience Movement. The movement of breaking the salt law started in various parts of the country. Under the Civil Disobedience Movement, programmes like boycott of foreign clothes, non-payment of taxes including revenue, ban on alcohol, picketing of liquor bars. prevention of untouchability. Hindu-Muslim unity, etc. were carried out. A large number of farmers, tribals and women participated in these movements. In the border area of the province, a non-violent fight of 'no tax' was fought under the leadership of 'Frontier Gandhi' Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan. The British tried to suppress the movement by arresting thousands of satyagrahis.
Thus, extraordinary awareness and unity were seen among Indians due to Gandhiji's Dandi March. Satyagrahas to break the salt law were undertaken all over the country.
