Question
Write classification of polymers on the basis of structure.

Answer

On the basis of structure polymers are classified in three types:

  1. Linear or straight-chain polymers: When monomer molecules are joined together in a linear arrangement, a straight-chain polymer is created. For example: High-density polymer (Polythene), PVC (Polyvinyl chloride).
  2. Branched-chain polymers: Branching-chain polymers are created when a monomer has three functional groups or already has side chains. As an example, consider low-density polythene.
  3. Cross linked polymers: This type of polymer is created by cross-linking linear chains to form a network-like structure. Bakelite, melamine, and other similar materials are examples.
