More than 80% of India’s population was illiterate and, therefore, a matter of concern for the constitution-makers. To tackle the problem of illiteracy, the following Directive Principles were laid down.
Make provision for free and compulsory education for all children in the age group of 6 to 14 years within a period of ten years from the date of implementation of the constitution.
This provision was implemented in the year 2009 by including the Right to Education as Fundamental Right.
Prohibition of intoxicating and harmful substances drugs.
Steps should be taken for protection of environment forests, bio-diversity and wildlife.
To enact laws to ensure the safety of workers by laying down suitable conditions in workplace.
India has a rich cultural heritage. The state/ government has been directed to preserve and protect the sites of cultural and historical heritage by enacting appropriate laws in this regard.
