Mahavir Swami is the $24th$ and last Tirthankar of Jainism. His real name was Vardhaman. He was born in a Kshatriya family in Kundgram (Bihar), the state of Vajji union. His father’s name was Siddhartha and his mother’s name was Trishaladevi. His wife’s name was Yashoda and his daughter’s name was Priyadarshini. He left home at the age of $30$. He attained the highest knowledge by doing harsh penance for $12$ years. He preached to people and showed the world the path of non-violence. He preached to people in Prakrit and Ardhamagdhi languages. He said, “Those who want to know the truth should leave home. Non-violence should be strictly followed. Non-violence means not only killing but also not hurting any creature; because every creature has the right to live. Every one shoud follow the five Mahavratas “Ahimsa (Non-violence), Satya (Truth), Asteya (Not to steal), Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness), Brahmacharya (Celibacy).” He asked monks to go from door to door asking for food (Bhiksha) and to lead a simple life. Mahavir Swami is well-known as the great reformer of Jainism and ‘Good virtue practitioner’ of society.
