  • India has two archipelagos : $(1)$ Laksha- dweep Islands and $(2)$Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Both these archipelagos are formed in different ways.
  • Lakshadweep Islands are located at about $280$ to $480\ km$ away from Kerala in Arabian Sea. This archipelago is formed of many small islands of coral deposits. Most of them have an ox-bow shape. Such coral islands are called Atolls’. There are a total of $27$ islands in Lakshadweep out of which $11$ are inhabited.
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located at about $1200\ km$ away equally from Chennai and Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal. These islands are bigger, are more in number and are spread in much wider area than the Lakshadweep Islands. Out of $572$ islands, there is habitation on $25$ islands of Andaman group and on $13$ islands of Nicobar group of islands. Other islands are barren.
  • These islands are peaks of the submerged mountains system. Some of them have volcanic origin. Some islands are about $60$ to $100\ km$ long. Nicobar Islands are spread over $350\ km.$
  • Andaman-Nicobar Islands are also important strategically.
