Functions of Thyroid Hormones:
1. This hormone stimulates energy production in most cells of the body and influences the rate of metabolism, that is, the tempo of life.
2. Thyroxine increases the number of mitochondria in most body cells, including those in the lungs, brain, testes, spleen, etc.
3. It prompts various metabolic control processes in the intestine, such as the uptake of glucose, the Basal Metabolic Rate, glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, etc.
4. Thyroxine also regulates bodily growth and development, cellular physiology, and reproductive functions.
5. This hormone also regulates the heart rate.
6. Thyroxine triggers metamorphosis in tadpoles. In its absence, metamorphosis does not occur in tadpoles.
7. This hormone regulates moulting and osmoregulation in poikilothermic (cold-blooded) organisms.
