Question
Write the physical properties of ethanoic acid.

Answer

The physical properties of ethanoic acid (acetic acid) are as follows :
(1) Ethanoic acid is a colourless liquid having vinegar like odour.
(2) The boiling point of pure ethanoic acid is 391 K.
(3) The melting point of pure ethanoic acid is 290 K and hence it often freezes during winter in cold climates. Therefore, it is also known as glacial acetic acid.
(4) $5-8\%$ solution of ethanoic acid in water (aqueous solution) is called vinegar.
(5) Ethanoic acid is a weak acid; but hydrochloric acid is a strong acid as it ionises completely.
