1. Qualifications :
(1) The person should be a citizen of India.
(2) Must have completed years of age.
(3) Should be eligible to be elect as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
(4) Must not be a member of Parliament or State Legislature. In case a member, must resign prior to contesting the election.
2. Election :
Elected by a secret ballot in the Joint-session of two Houses of Parliament.
3. Term of office :
Elected for a term of five years. Could be removed earlier by the Rajya Sabha by passing a vote of no-confidence by Simple majority and with concurrence of the Lok Sabha by simple majority.
4. Functions and powers :
(1)He is ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
(2) He discharges the duties of the President in his/her absence.
(3) If the office of the President falls vacant, acts as the ‘Acting President’ till such time a new President is elected.
5. Salary and Allowances:
As determined by Parliament from time to time.
