Question 23 Marks
Write short note : Depositional Plain
Answer
Depositional plains are formed in two ways :
$(1)$ Alluvial Plains : When a river is flooded, the alluvium brought by the river is deposited on both banks of the river. Thus, alluvial plains are formed. The Ganga - Yamuna plain of India, Huang Ho plain in North China, Lombardy plain formed by Po river in Italy are examples of alluvial plains.
$(2)$ Lacustrine Plains : Some rivers meet lakes. These rivers deposit their the sediments, soil, sand, etc. in the lakes. So the lake is gradually filled and in due course of time a plain is formed which is called Lacustrine Plain. The Kashmir valley and Imphal region of Manipur state in India have Lacustrine plains. [When the river meets the sea, it deposits abundant alluvium near the coastal area due to its slow flow. The plain thus formed is called ‘Delta Plain.’ When the wind deposits the soil and sand particles brought with it are obstructed or if the velocity of the wind reduces, a depositional plain is formed. It is called ‘Loess Plain’.
