Question 13 Marks
Where is silk obtained from ? Describe the process. Also name the states in India that produce silk.
Answer
Silk is obtained from an insect called the silk moth or Bombyx mori. A female silk moth lays eggs which transform into worm-like larvae called caterpillars or silkworms. They feed on mulberry leaves and have silk glands with the help of which they secrete the silk thread and weave protective structure around its body called the cocoon. In silk forms, the thread is carefully unwound from the cocoon and treated with chemicals to obtain silk yam. The yam is then woven into silk fabric. In India, sericulture centres are located in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kashmir.
