A student measures the terminal potential difference $(V)$ of a cell $($ of $emf \;\varepsilon $ and internal resistance $r)$ as a function of the current $(I)$ flowing through it. The slope, and intercept, of the graph between $V$ and $I$, then, respectively, equal

$V=\varepsilon-I r$ , comparing with  $y=c-m x$

$\therefore \quad$ Slope $=-r,$ internal resistance.

$V_{\max }=\operatorname{emf} \varepsilon .$ This is intercept on the $y-$ axis.

$\therefore$ Slope is negative.

$\therefore \quad I$ decreases as $R$ increases.

An ammeter $A$ of finite resistance, and a resistor $R$ are joined in series to an ideal cell $C$. $A$ potentiometer $P$ is joined in parallel to $R$. The ammeter reading is $I_0$ and the potentiometer reading is $V_0$. $P$ is now replaced by a voltmeter of finite resistance. The ammeter reading now is $I$ and the voltmeter reading is $V$.
