Question
Classify the elements based on their property of conductivity with suitable examples.

Answer

  • Elements can be classified into three categories on the basis of their conductivity:
  • $(1)$ Metallic elements :
  • They have high values of electrical conductivity.
  • For example, Copper $(Cu)$, Aluminium $(Al)$, Silver $(Ag)$.
  • $(2)$ Non-metallic elements :
  • They have low values of electrical conductivity.
  • For example, Oxygen $\left(\mathrm{O}_2\right)$, Nitrogen $\left(\mathrm{N}_2\right)$, Chlorine $\left(\mathrm{Cl}_2\right)$.
  • $(3)$ Metalloids :
  • The values of their electrical conductivity is lower than metals but higher than non-metals.
  • For example, Silicon $(Si)$, Germanium $(Ge)$.
