Question
Explain enthalpy of atomization with example.

Answer

The enthalpy change caused by breaking all the bonds present in one mole of a substance, separating it into atoms and converting it into gaseous state is called atomization enthalpy.
Example :
(i) $H _2$ (g) $\rightarrow 2 H ( g ) \Delta_{ a } H ^{\ominus}=435.05 kJ mol ^{-1}$
(ii) Na (s) $\rightarrow Na$ (g) $\Delta H _{ a }^{\ominus}=108.4 kJ mol ^{-1}$
