During the Chola period, irrigation works were a critical component of the region's agricultural and economic development. For expanding agriculture, Chola rulers developed many irrigation facilities. Embankments were built to prevent flooding and canals were constructed to carry water to the fields.
Careful planning was done to ensure proper irrigation to all regions. People who were given land grants could collect taxes. These taxes were used to maintain and construct irrigation facilities. Thus, we can conclude that irrigation works required planning in organising labour and maintenance which the Chola dynasty successfully did. Irrigation techniques used by them are still used today.
