Question
What is meant by precipitation reaction? Explain it with examples.

Answer

  • Chemical reaction in which an insoluble precipitate (solid) formed is known as precipitation reaction.
  • For example, reaction between $\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}$ ions of $\mathrm{BaCl}_2$, and $\mathrm{SO}_4{ }^{2-}$ ions of $\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$ gives white precipitate of $\mathrm{BaSO}_4$, which is insoluble in water.
  • $\mathrm{BaCl}_2(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow \mathrm{BaSO}_4(\mathrm{~s})+2 \mathrm{NaCl}(\mathrm{aq})$

  • Other example:
  • $\mathrm{AgNO}_3(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{NaCl}(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow \mathrm{AgCl}(\mathrm{s})+\mathrm{NaNO}_3(\mathrm{aq})$
