Question
With the help of an example, explain how the neutron to proton ratio changes during $\alpha-$decay of a nucleus.

Answer

Let us like the example of $\alpha-$decay of $^{238}_{92}\text{U}.$ The decay scheme is
$^{238}_{92}\text{U}\rightarrow ^{234}_{90}\text{Th}+^4_2\alpha \text{ (or}^4_2\text{He})$
Neutron to proton ratio before $\alpha-$decay $=\frac{238-92}{92}=\frac{146}{92}=1.59$
Neutron to proton ratio after $\alpha-$decay $=\frac{238-90}{90}=\frac{144}{90}=1.60$
$\frac{146}{92}<\frac{144}{90}$
This shows that the neutron to proton ratio increases during $\alpha-$decay of a nucleus.

Two identically charged particles are fastened to the two ends of a spring of spring constant $100\ Nm^{-1}$ and natural length 10cm. The system rests on a smooth horizontal table. If the charge on each particle is $2.0 \times 10^{-8}C$, find the extension in the length of the spring. Assume that the extension is small as compared to the natural length. A semiconducting material has a band gap of 1eV. Acceptor impurities are doped into it which create acceptor levels 1meV above the valence band. Assume that the transition from one energy level to the other is almost forbidden if kT is less than $\frac{1}{50}$ of the energy gap. Also, if kT is more than twice the gap, the upper levels have maximum population. The temperature of the semiconductor is increased from 0K. The concentration of the holes increases with temperature and after a certain temperature it becomes approximately constant. As the temperature is further increased, the hole concentration again starts increasing at a certain temperature. Find the order of the temperature range in which the hole concentration remains approximately constant.
