Question
Write a short note on baking soda $\left( NaHCO _3\right)$.
✓
Answer
Preparation :
When carbon dioxide gas is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride and further saturated with ammonia gas, forms baking soda $\left( NaHCO _3\right)$.
$NaCl + H _2 O + CO _2+ NH _3+ NH _4 Cl + NaHCO _3$
By passing carbon dioxide gas in an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, baking soda can be obtained.
$Na _2 CO _3( aq )+ H _2 O ( l )+ CO _2(g) \rightarrow 2 NaHCO _3( aq )$
Chemical name of baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate or sodium bicarbonate.
It is a mild non-corrosive basic salt.
When it is heated during cooking the food, following reaction occurs:
$2 NaHCO _3(s) \xrightarrow{ Heat } Na _2 CO _3(s)+ H _2 O ( g )+ CO _2(g)$
Uses :
$(1)$ For making baking powder.
$(2)$ When it is heated or mixed in water, carbon dioxide produced during the reaction makes bread, cake or pakoras soft and spongy.
$(3)$ As an antacids.
$(4)$ It is used in soda-acid fire-extinguishers.
$(5)$ As disinfectant.
$(6)$ As a reagent in laboratory.
