Ravi Varma was born in $1848\ AD$ in the Kilimannur village of Kerala in a royal family. Since Ravi Varma was born in a royal family, he came to be known as Raja Ravi Varma. In his time, the field of art was highly influenced by [Raja Ravi Varma] western art. Ravi Varma developed his distinctive style by receiving art education and guidance from Shri Ramaswami Naidu, Theodore Jensen and European guest painters from royal families. Raja Ravi Varma's paintings were realistic. Technique was more important than emotions in his paintings. His achievements in creating portraits was unique. He was highly praised for his oil paintings centred on the occasions and characters depicted in mythological scriptures and Sanskrit literature. His oil paintings include Goddess Saraswati, Virat Darbar, Ganga-Avataran, Urvashi, Shakuntala, Portrait of a Lady, etc. Ravi Varma started a lithography printing press in Ghatkopar, Mumbai in $1894\ AD$. The pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses printed in this press could be bought by the common people due to their low (normal) price. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Vadodara and the king of Bhavnagar had invited Raja Ravi Varma to make some mythological paintings and paintings of the royal family. His paintings are preserved in the Trivandrum Museum, the Fatehsinharao Art Gallery in Vadodara and in the Darbar in Bhavnagar. He was honored by the British government with the title of 'Kaiser-e-Hind'. Raja Ravi Varma was the king of art and an invaluable heritage of the country. Raja Ravi Varma passed away in $1906\ AD.$
