While working as a therapist, Carl Rogers developed a client centred approach. He presented this new approach in his book. "Counselling and Psychotherapy" in 1942 in which he gave importance to the quality of relationship between counselor and counselee. Rogers considers the therapist as a creator of comfortable environment which helps the counselee to proceed towards his self development. This approach presents the positive and optimistic thought regarding human nature.
He stated that the aim of every individual is to be fully functioning and remain active. According to him, higher is the coherence between individual's self- concept and his experiences, better will be his mental health.
This therapy puts more stress on the relationship between the counselor and counselee. In this therapy, the skills of counselor are more important than the counselling techniques. The basic assumption of this approach is that if proper condition for the development are established than the client will become capable of gaining insight and will take positive and constructive steps towards the solution of their problems. According to Rogers approach, the following conditions are necessary for the treatment. (1) There must be direct psychological contact between the therapist and the client. (2) The counselling can be more successful when the client has the lowest level of anxiety. (3) The counselor should be frank and consistent with reference towards and feelings with the counselee. (4) The counselor should accept counselee as an individual and show respect to him/her. (5) Therapist tries to understand the clients feelings by imagining himself in the patient's situation and then proceed for the therapy. (6) Therapist tries to justify his understanding by asking the client and try to understand him.
In short, in this process, a client gets ready for the treatment when he considers himself ineffective in solving his problems. He feels related on the onset of the therapy. His thoughts are reconstructed. Thus, he develops positive self-image, understands the reality and becomes able to face the real experiences independently.
This approach has a great impact on the counselling profession. This approach has developed new sight in the field of counselling.
