The resistance of voltmeter is very high and resistance of ammeter is very low. When ammeter is put in parallel to $8 \,k \Omega$ resistor, nearly whole of current goes through the ammeter. Hence, circuit is equivalent to following.

So, maximum potential drop occurs in the voltmeter (high resistance). Hence, reading of voltmeter is nearly $6 \,V$.
