Why does a compass needle get deflected when brought near a bar magnet?
✓
Answer
A compass needle is a small bar magnet with one north pole and the other south pole. When a compass is brought near a bar magnet, compass needle gets deflected due to the forces acting on its pole due to the magnetic field of the bar magnet. Note : When compass needle is brought near a bar magnet it is acted upon by the force due to the magnetic field of the earth as well as that due to the bar magnet. Therefore, it gets deflected and finally comes to rest in the direction on he net force.
