Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had an idea in his mind to build a dam on the river Narmada as part of overcoming the water shortage in Kutch-Saurashtra of Gujarat at the time of independence of the country.
The scheme was dormant for years due to various political changes and lack of political will in the Central and State Governments.
But over the past decade, the distribution and planning of the Narmada River has become clearer.
Plans were started to build a big dam on the river Narmada.
The scheme, launched with the objective of generating electricity for Sardar Sarovar Dam and providing drinking water to millions of people as well as water for irrigation for agricultural products, was opposed by environmental activists.
After the Narmada Bachao movement started in 1985, some locals and some NGOs joined.
