Question
Write short notes on : Battle of Plassey

Answer

The Battle of Plassey was fought between the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daula and the British.
Siraj-ud-Daula attacked the trade centre at Fort William on $15th$ June, $1756$ and defeated the British. On receiving this news, the British quickly sent an army under the leadership of Clive to Calcutta (Kolkata). Manekchand, a trustworthy of the Nawab accepted a bribe and handed over Calcutta (Kolkata) to the British. The British resorted to lowly diplomacy in which bribery was predominant. Clive bribed Siraj-ud Daula's commander-in-chief of the army, Mir Jafar, by promising to make him the Nawab. At the same time, they also got big leaders of Bengal Jagat Seth, Rai Durlabh and Amichand onto their side.
In March $1757$, the British invaded the French colony and challenged the Nawab's sovereignty. As a result, on June $23, 1757 AD$ a battle was fought between Clive's and the Nawab's armies at a place called Plassey near Murshidabad. Due to commander-in-chief Mir Jafar's betrayal, Siraj-ud-Daula was defeated in the Battle of Plassey. Siraj-ud-Daula was captured and killed.
The British made Mir Jafar the Nawab of Bengal. He gave land (jagir) of $24$ parganas to the British and allowed them to trade without excise. After the Battle of Plassey the whole of Bengal came under the control of the British and from here they became the owners of the institution in place of merchants. Thus, the Battle of Plassey marked the start of the British rule in India. By $1818$, the whole of India was under British rule.
